Games I Like

© Dan Finkelstein

If you read my last article, you read about the types of games that I can't stand, mainly Role-playing games and war games. Well, enough negativity. This week I'll talk about the games I like.

First off, the type of game that I like the most has to be action/arcade games. These type of games try to bring the experience of the arcade--fast paced, easy-to-understand gameplay--to the home computer. The first video game was an action game--Pong. The reason I like these kind of games so much is probably because I like going to arcades. One day, I want to buy an arcade. My goal in life (well, one of my goals in life) is to find and buy the original cabinets of the famous arcade games, Out Run, and then Afterburner (Note to faithful readers: if you know where I could find any of these games, please, please, PLEASE, e-mail me!!!). Action games usually have fancy, high-tech graphics and require the best systems to play. Some of my favorite all-time action/arcade games are Quake, Descent, The Need for Speed, and Star Raiders (Atari 800).

I've also been know to play Adventure games, which emphasize problem or puzzle solving to advance a story. Some of my favorite Adventure games include Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle, and Space Quest III+IV. Some adventure games are downright hard, although lately it seems like they are getting easier and easier. I remember when I was playing through Sierra's classic, "Conquests of Camelot", I begged my mom to call the Sierra hint line (this was before I had a modem). Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to call, but I eventually figured out what to do. Probably the most famous adventure game companies are Sierra and LucasArts. Sierra gets the medal for the first adventure game, Kings Quest I, where you typed commands with the keyboard. Unfortunately, the quality of adventure games has recently been decreased--Sierra's games are now, in my opinion, dull and boring reincarnations of previous games. LucasArts, however, is still in there, although they have recently started to focus more on Simulations and Action games. Fortunately, Electronic Arts, has started to publish a few good games. I recently got a chance to play Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Rose Tatoo, which can only be described as classic adventure.

My third favorite game category is Space Combat/Simulation games. Basically, these games simulate flight, either in a plane or spaceship. My all time favorite game has to be Wing Commander II. The game was simply awesome. But that's a topic for another article. Other great space combat/simulation games include X-Wing, Stunt Island (where you could fly and film your own stunts--a classic), and Wing Commander IV.

Sorry to nitpick, but Pong wasn't (necessarily) the first video game. It all depends on how you look at it. Pong (or a version of it) was created back in the mid-60s. The first game the public saw, ...
