The Olympic Games from Nagano, Japan are in full force, but while watching CBS's 7 straight hours of coverage, did you ever think to yourself: "I can do that!" Well, let me tell you one thing: you can't. But you can do the next best thing: buy a computer game based on an Olympic event! Dynamix's "Front Page Sports: Skiing" let's you simulate the thrill of the downhill without the inconvenience of actually getting on skis.
It's been a long, long time since I've played a skiing game I've enjoyed... However, after playing a demo of "Front Page Sports: Skiing", I can safely say that Dynamix has managed to make the most entertaining skiing game since Nintendo's Slalom. The game stars Peekaboo Street, an Olympic skier, who, I should add, brought home a gold medal for the US a few days ago. Peekaboo acts as your skier character, and also provides skiing tips via video clips and animations. Graphically, I was very impressed with the game. They reminded me of a Sega skiing arcade game that came out last year -- which, for a computer game, is a very good complement. The graphics engine is fast, with various which you can turn off on slower computers. The game also supports DirectX 3D accelerator cards. Also standing out for me was the sound effects, which were of very high quality. The sound of skiing is duplicated nicely, with wind blowing and the skis cutting through the powder. The only thing that is missing is the cow bells in the crowd watching on the side. As for the game itself, there are various modes of play, duplicating the different Olympic events. In the demo, the downhill was the only event, but the full version promises other events. I found the game to be quite difficult.... there was always one part of the course where I would slam into the side, sending Ms. Street flying through the air, slamming into the snow and tumbling down the mountain. obviously, no records would be set during *that* run. Of course, after sufficient practice, practice, practice, I eventually finished the run. So if you're wishing for a high quality skiing game for your computer, or just bedridden up from your last skiing mishap, Dynamix's Front Page Sports: Skiing should be just your cup of tea.
