When I heard that Origin was releasing the fifth in their epic Wing Commander series, I was obviously excited: the WC series is, by far, my favorite computer game series created I own, and have beaten, every Wing Commander game made ever since the first one, which brought my 286 to its knees. But when I heard that the creator and director and king of the WC universe, Chris Roberts, has left the company, I was a bit skeptical. However, after playing through the latest WC game, I can safely say that Wing Commander: Prophecy should make Chris Roberts proud: in my opinion, it's the best of the series.
Before I begin my review, let me give you a quick overview of the past Wing Commander games. Set in a vast universe of the future, Wing Commander 1 put you on the front lines of the war with a fierce alien enemy, known as the Kilrathi. As a rookie fighter pilot for the TCS Tigers Claw, you lead the Confederation forces against all odds, proving victorious over the Kilrathi in the Vega sector. In Wing Commander 2, the story continues, telling how you were falsely accused for the destruction of the Tigers Claw when your character left the battle to investigate so-called "invisible fighters." Revoked of your rank, and labeled as a traitor, you find yourself doing recon work for a space station in the middle of space. Soon you are thrown back into the middle of the war to try and clear your name and prove that the Kilrathi really do have invisible fighters. At the end of the epic game, you and the TCS Concordia manage to beat the enemy back even more, turning the tides on the war and restoring your name. In Wing Commander 3, the story continues as the Kilrathi advance towards Earth. Your character (now named "Christopher Blair" and played by Mark Hamill in full-motion video), once again finds himself on the front lines. In the end when the Confederation has begun to lose hope, a brilliant new bomb is delivered by Blair to the core of Kilrah, destroying the Kilrathi's home planet and ending the war in one fell swoop. In Wing Commander 4, Christopher Blair finds himself pulled from retirement back into the battle, but this time with a new enemy: humans themselves. In this epic game, the Border Worlds, systems between Confed and Kilrahti space, wage a vendetta against themselves, as well as the Confederation. Once again, it's Blair's job to uncover a web of deceit, lies, and deadly bio weapons that can destroy populations. In the end, Admiral Tolwyin (Malcolm McDowell) is exposed as the organizer of the renegade faction, and peace comes once again to the universe . . . for now. Go To Page: 1 2
