Review: Grand Theft Auto - Part 1

A few weeks ago I reviewed a game called Carmageddon, a game which revolved around an old American past time: killing people with large, souped up automobiles while at the same time trying to destroy your opponents by ramming into them at very high speeds.

I also mentioned how this game was literally banned in England, and the creators had to release a "toned down" version without the blood or guts.

Well, continuing with the theme of "games that are really, really twisted", comes this week's title Grand Theft Auto by our good friends at DMA Design, makers of the classic puzzle game, Lemmings.

Basically, in Grand Theft Auto, you play a relative newcomer to the wonderful world of car-jacking, drug running, and the underground ring of terrorists, Mafioso, and criminals. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to car-jack automobiles, drive them to a telephone where you receive your mission, then complete the mission in a certain amount of time.

The missions are quite varied and a whole lot of fun, although some are amazingly hard with many parts. This brings me to problem #1 with this game: Since you view the game world through a direct overhead view, simply finding where you have to go can be a chore. Fortunately, a yellow arrow points you in the write direction. However, sometimes even this is not enough, and you will find yourself wishing for a map. This is especially true in some of the cities where a large river or lake blocks your way to the destination.

Getting back to the missions, they usually involve driving to a certain location, picking someone up or transferring vehicles. In one of my favorites, you have to drive to the dock, pick up a large tanker truck, then park it in a specific location and wait for it to explode to take out a certain high ranking city official. As the game explains: "The new police commissioner wants a raise. Big Jimmy wants him dead." Other missions involve delivering car-jacked taxis to certain locations, or stealing back some heisted crack from a rival gang.

Along the way, of course, are the cops. They'll chase you all over town, jumping out of their cars and yanking you out of yours. The AI of the game here is impressive. Cops will team up to make barricades, or cut you off as you turn up an alley. Get busted and you'll find yourself back where you started.
