There's nothing like some good old-fashioned controversy to bring attention to a new computer game. Carmageddon, by England's SCI, was initially banned in the UK for its "blood and gore factor" until SCI released a toned-down version of the game, with "Zombies" instead of people. When even that was not acceptable in some countries, the programmers set out to make yet another version of the game, this time with robots.
Anyway, as you may have guessed from the description of this little controversy, yes, Carmageddon is a pretty bloody and gory game, which I'll go into later. First, a brief description. Carmageddon is one of those good old-fashioned racing game, but with a little twist to it. Sure, you can speed around the track several times to win a race, but why do that when you can choose a much better option destroy all your opponents by ramming into them at very high speed! While at its core Carmageddon is just a beefed up version of the Psygnosis game, Destruction Derby, it throws a lot of innovative features into the mix that makes Carmageddon a much more fun game to play. Features include upgradeable armor, offensive power and defensive power, and the ability to repair damage on the fly. Also add dozens of really cool power-ups that scatter the various tracks turbos, credit bonuses, as well as the stranger "lunar gravity," "pinball mode," and my favorite (although very annoying) "bouncy bouncy." There are about a dozen or so cars that you can drive, although many of them do not become available until later in the game. Each handles a little differently, although none are in any way easy. Turns and breaking is very tricky, especially at high speed. So, I hear you asking . . . . Why was this game banned? Well, I haven't gotten to the part where you get to kill pedestrians. Yes, you heard me right. While SCI could have released a "destruction derby" type game, it decided to add one more innovative feature kill pedestrians for money. Accompanied by witty remarks by the "Pratt Cam" (a little representation of your character in the corner of the screen) like "Yeah!" or "Got 'em!" or "Bet that hurt!" the little people (who like to stand in the middle of the road) explode into little chunks as you plow through them at high speed, leaving cute little blood trails and a heap of guts on the ground where they once stood. A little unrealistic . . . yeah. Sort of Satanic . . . a little. Lots of fun? You bet! Go To Page: 1 2
