Fun Windows Games!

Alright, so I lied. Last month, I promised I'd be reviewing Westwood's newest release, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun in this spot this month. Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, mainly school and other related events, I was not able to play this game enough to write a comprehensive review. So far, however, I don't see what the big deal about this game is -- it seems a lot like the first to me. Anyway, look for my review of this game next month.

Instead this month, I'd like to write a few brief reviews of the what I believe to be the most overlooked genre in computer gaming: Fun Windows Games! Oh yes, Windows games are a great diversion/procrastination tool to work, homework, etc. -- fun, easy to use, and, of course, amazingly addictive. Windows Solitare addicts unite!

Anyway, here is my personal list of my five favorite Windows games:

1. Windows Solitaire (Type "sol.exe"(enter) in Start..Run)

Ahh, an oldie but a goodie. No matter how hard I try, I simply can not stop playing this gem, which has come with pretty much every computer sold since 1990. The game is your simple, basic solitaire game.. create four stacks of cards, ace through king, by turning over cards in order from the playing field. Everyone knows the rules -- they were invented far before computers. Not only is the game constantly challenging, but is also customizable, allowing you to choose between a "Draw one" and "Draw three" game (one being far more easier), timed game, "Vegas" Rules, and of course, my favorite option -- you can choose between one of a dozen card sets, each with a different picture on their backs. Personally, I always choose the robot. Windows Solitare also knows how to reward the player for a win, with a dazzling display of bouncing cards that never fails to amuses me.

2. Clickomania

Clickomania is a game a friend sent over to me over ICQ about a year ago, and I have not stopped playing it since. It's one of those games -- like Tetris -- that is so simple in design, it's amazing that no one has thought of it before. Clickomania, by a young Swiss man named Matthais, is one of those games. The basis is easy -- it's sort of like Tetris in reverse -- you start with a playing field filled with blocks of a variety of colors.. where two or more colors touch, you can click to remove them, making the blocks on top fall down. The idea is to clear all the blocks, leaving as few remaining as possible, with the main goal being to leave no blocks at all (out of hundreds, if not thousands of games played, this author has only done that feat 4 times). There are settings to control difficulty, like "special stones" which include special pieces like rockets to destroy lines of blocks, or the ability to set the number of colors that make up the playing field (the higher the number, obviously, the harder the game. Ever since my friend has sent Clickomania to me, I've always been able to blame him for my lack of productivity at times. Send it to your friends, and they'll blame you too.
