Review: Quake Rally: Part 2

The handling of the car is good, and behaves like a real Rally racer, with power slides and skids all very easy to pull off. While jumps seem a bit exaggerated (cars fly through the air for what seems like miles), steering works amazingly well. People who are used to playing Quake with the mouse, however, should consider using the keyboard for QuakeRally. While there really isn't an inboard camera, a steering wheel is always onscreen to help with steering your vehicle.

Gameplay with one player is pretty bland, with the only single-player option available being the "timer trials" where you race around a track, trying to "beat the clock" while collecting the various flags to boost your time. If you're disappointed by the lack of single-player features, don't worry -- the author promises he's working on an option to have computer controlled opponents ("bots"), that you'll be able to race against. When that particular upgrade comes out, I'll be sure to review QuakeRally again.

Despite the bugs in the multiplayer features of QuakeRally, and the lack of single-player options, there's really no way I can give QuakeRally a bad review, just for the fact that it's QuakeRally -- a racing game for Quake! Who knows how many technical hurdles it's authors had to go through to make this game work? QuakeRally really proves that with the Quake engine, really anything is possible. Who knows what will be possible with the release of Quake 2 later this year...

(Which, by the way, is the next thing everyone's waiting for....)
