Okay, you've just gone out and bought this cool new game, but you're having a small problem. Mainly, you're losing. Badly. Well, don't worry too much. First of all, it's just a game. Second of all, I can fix that. In this article, I'll divulge some of my secret tips and tricks about Need for Speed 2 just for you, the readers of this groovy column. And if you're really stuck or just want to have some fun, I'll even through in some cheats for good measure. Well, here goes:
Tips + Tricks
Lesson one: Know the tracks. What's the key to good driving? Practice, practice, practice! You have to know these tracks like the back of your hand. Know which way the next curve is going to turn. Use the scenery to keep track where you are on the track and to alert you of upcoming hazards. Think like, "Okay, when I see that tree, I have to brake hard, turn to the left then immediately to the right."
Don't Crash
Yeah, I know it sounds obvious, but crashing can slow you down and cost you the race. If you insist on crashing, do it at the beginning of the race, when you can make up for lost time. At the end, take fewer risks. If you're in front, try to stay in front!
The brake: use it
If you've ever driven a real car, you'll know that the brake is something you can't live without. Same thing in this game. No matter how straight you think the track is, there is not one track in the game (except for the first "practice" track) where you can get away without using that brake. You need to. Believe me, I suffered from the "non-brake syndrome" for a long time--once you get into it, you'll see that braking isn't that bad!
Play NFS2 in SIMULATION MODE
A beginner's first thought will be to probably play the game in the "Arcade mode" because that sounds easier. Wrong! True, the "Arcade" mode does make is easier to peel out and recover from crashes quicker, but if you actually want to win races you'll have to play in Simulation mode. The reason? Power Sliding (see the next section)
Master the art of the Power Slide
Power Sliding is probably the most important aspect of NFS2 (and many other racing games, for that matter). You'll need it if you're planning on winning, and you'll have to get good at it. To powerslide, head towards the middle of a turn, and quickly jerk the wheel all the way to the direction you are turning. You'll hear the tires squeal, and the back may slip out, but don't worry -- you're making good time. As you come out of the turn, you may need to make corrections. Depending on the curve, you should end your slide at different times. Practice, practice, practice!
