Review: Shrak for Quake: The first Quake 'TC' rocks© Dan Finkelstein
Mar 11, 1997
I must admit, I was a little skeptic about the first "TC" (Total Conversion) of Quake. Face it: Quake, the first true 3-D action game, is just so awesome, the pinnacle of computer gaming, the ultimate in first person carnage, how the heck could anyone improve it? Amazingly, the guys at Quantum Axess have proved me wrong. Shrak rocks. "Shrak for Quake" is billed "brain crunching carnage", which pretty much sums it up. Like Quake, there is only an inkling of a plot to the game--something about an alien colony that is taken over by genetically engineered mutants...I'm not really sure, because I was having too much fun blasting the new monster's to pieces to notice.
Gameplay is basically the same as Quake...You start off with the weakest weapon, and have to wander around levels, looking for keys, ammo, and bigger and better weapons while all the while gibbing (Quake'ease for killing) anything that gets in your way. So what's so different about "Shrak"? Well, I'm glad you asked. Everything (and I do mean Everything) has been changed. The Quantum Axcess people have added 19 new levels, 9 new bad guys, sounds, music, and--oh yes--9 awesome new weapons.
Your arsenal is made up of a few of the best weapon add-on's that have been floating around the Internet for a few months, plus a few new ones: There's the ever popular "Claw", to reach high platforms, the "foe 2 friend converter" (turn the bad-guys into friends), and everyone's favorite, the plastic explosive. They've also added the "proton laser", the "liquid cooled uzi", the "inflater dartgun" (shoot gas into the baddies, and watch them pop), the very-cool "hfb launcher", and, of course, the "missile launcher".
The 9 new enemies are a varied bunch--you've got the basic military mutant guy, the monster spider, and the two-headed slashing guy. One of my favorite improvements is how Quantum has provided multiple textures for the enemies so you can tell how damaged they are (they get bloodier as you shoot them). This lets you target the most damaged baddies and get them out of the way before moving on to the others. The 19 new levels are simply amazing. The excellent architecture includes include bridges, moving "trams", spiral stair cases, and more. If that's not enough, the pack also includes special deathmatch and capture-the-flag levels for Internet play (although it's harder to find a server using the Shrak levels, but they're out there).
