DECISION FIVE: EXTRAS. This is a bit hit-and-miss as it really does vary from company to company as to what you get. You should always get a keyboard, mouse and Windows software. Most companies will also throw in some form of office software, a modem and a sound card (these are not standards on the Dell but are available very cheaply indeed through their customization process). If you already have a spare modem or sound card then re-use them – the technology has not changed very much recently. You can then add on such optional extras as a CD-Writer, DVD player, joystick and scanner but many of these will add quite a bit to the price of the machine and are really unnecessary if all you desire is a good gaming experience. However, if you think you might want any of these it is advisable buying them with your system rather than as add-ons later because (i) you don’t have to fit them, (ii) the company selling you the system will guarantee that they work, (ii) it may invalidate your warranty to retro-fit one and (iv) they can be a lot cheaper!
If you follow these guidelines strictly you should end up with a great quality system from a good vendor at a price attractive to you! Just two last warnings: first of all make sure to factor into your price the cost of delivery and then the cost of an after-sales service package. Don’t be stung when these extra costs appear on your bill. Secondly do shop around and do find a system that is right for you. When you see what appears to be a steal of a system analyze its weaknesses carefully and if it holds up then pounce. If not, keep looking – there are some excellent websites out there and at the end of the day if no pre-built systems fit your requirements then try and purpose-modify one yourself. Have no fear.
