Making a Family Recipe Book

This month I'm going to focus on long term projects that can be given as gifts for Christmas or other occassions. These projects take a while to put together so it's never to early to start!

It's never too late to start thinking about gifts for Christmas. Yes, I know we've just survived another holiday season, but with some planning you can get a jump start on next Christmas gift giving.

Home-made gifts are very special to make as well as receive. Some take a lot of time to put together, such as a recipe book that can be given to your family. There are several steps to creating a booklet and with careful planning and researching it can be achieved.

The first thing I like to do is sit down and make a list of all the great dishes that you and your family have shared over the years. What are the ones that you have year after year? Complete a list of at least five recipes in several categories. You can look at the table of contents of a recipe book and form your list from that. Some ideas are: Main Dishes, Deserts, Salads, Dips, Drinks, Cookies, Vegetable dishes and any other dishes that have survived through the years.

After you've made your lists it is time to get the recipes together. Once you've done that now the real fun begins. Making the book. Create a cover that is personal and give your recipe book a title. I recommend using a half sheet for each page of your book. You can scan in photos for your cover or use clip-art. The choices are abundant.

Next you need to put the recipes in your book, this will take a bit of time and a program that is easy to work with. There are several choices on the market today that would be acceptable. I've used Print Artist and Micrografx Draw 6 for this. Create-A-Card, Printmaster or any other publishing program would be ideal for this project.

You have many options available to you as far as design goes. You can use a border and some clip-art or maybe you have photos of past get-togethers that you can use to personalize your page. Do this for each page, check spelling and make sure you have all the recipes in their correct categories.

You may want to add a couple of pages of memories from past holidays, photos or stories.
