Welcome back to Computer Crafting. This week and the following weeks are going to be devoted to programs, clip-art, graphics, and everything else that has to do with computer crafting. This week is an introduction into the following series, which will probably take several weeks. Also, be watching for a contest after April 15th, the prize will be a book from Amazon.com. Details will be posted at a later date.

There are a lot of programs to choose from and each has their own feature that they are superior in. At first glance it can be incredibly overwhelming at which program you should purchase. Then after a while you'll become addicted and want them all. This always happens; I've seen it so many times, even in my case.

Your first trip to the software store can be very exciting; well each trip to the software store is exciting. For general purposes though we will stick with a first time buyer. You walk in and find the Productivity section and boy oh boy; you see beautiful boxes of software. Then the confusion and questions start to take over. "What do I buy?'' There are a few things to keep in mind when buying your software. 1. Your computer: PC, if so, what is the speed, RAM and how much hard drive space do you have? 2. If you have a MAC does your machine have the requirements for the product? 3. Are you going to make mostly cards or are you feeling feisty and going to expand your creativity? 4. Are you planning on selling your creations? 5. Are you familiar with how software in general works or are you completely new to the computer and how software works? Each of these questions needs to be answered before you go and pick out your software, because it will help narrow down the field of choices.

Next, it is important to familiarize yourself with graphic formats and a little about how graphics work. We will directly address this issue in next week's article. I will have a surprise interview next week! I will announce who that is on my welcome page this Monday, so be sure to check back. Another consideration one must keep in mind is graphic viewers. There are many out there, for example Thumbs Plus(tm) and ACDSee(tm).

Fonts! Managing fonts can be a full time process if you aren't careful. Font managers and being frugal with your fonts is important. Every time you turn on your computer Windows must load all those fonts. If you aren't careful, you can get over 700 fonts in no time. Because the fonts are in your system directory they must load and that slows Windows down at boot-up. Some say it is ideal to have around 300 fonts. If you are like me, you are also addicted to fonts or will be in no time. So, font management is very important.
