Psychic Ability in Companion Birds -- Part 1

Do you believe companion animals have psychic abilities? Some studies suggest the possibility that animals, birds included, possess some degree of psychic capability. I have to admit there have been times when I've thought my two parrots demonstrated a level of extra sensory perception, or ESP. Not that I think they can pick lottery numbers or foretell the future, but on occasion I've been taken aback by their uncanny knowledge. This article doesn't present any scientific evidence of psychic ability in companion birds, but does relate a few 'psychic' experiences I've had with my parrots.

Last year my husband, Allen, a professional musician, was scheduled to perform at a lodge in the beautiful Catskill mountains of upstate New York. It was only weeks after he nearly died from a pulmonary embolism, and I was terribly concerned for him. The doctor assured us it was safe for him to fly, but then the weathermen began predicting dire things for the area to which Allen was traveling. But the show must go on, regardless of snow or health problems, so Allen took off for New York.

It began snowing the day after his arrival in the Catskills. During his stay in the mountains, we discovered that communication was sketchy due to the touchiness of the cell phone company's connections and the hampering effects of the weather. Snow piled deeper and deeper, and it began to look as if flights out of New York would be affected.

On the morning Allen was set to fly home, things began to look worse by the moment. I paced the floor, desperately praying that his flight would be safe. When he didn't call at the expected time, I was frantic. The airports were now closed, and all flights in or out were canceled. Where was Allen and why hadn't he called?

Every time I tried to reach him, I got a recorded message saying that the cell phone number was unavailable. I hesitated to keep dialing, wanting my line to be clear in case he was suddenly able to get out on his phone. Finally, I couldn't stand to wait any longer and punched in his number. It rang! With a lump in my throat, I waited for him to pick up. After the fifth ring, I was heartsick and ready to disconnect. Suddenly, Rio, who had been sitting silently in his cage, yelled out, "Hello?" Not more than a second later, I heard Allen's voice!
