Friendfinder offers non-paying members a daily limit on contacting and searching. Lavalife is a pay-as-you-go service and non-paying members can reply to messages and email. Kiss.com, Udate and Yahoo! Personals all require payment in order to make any type of contact. I'm not sure why people join the pay sites. It could be that only serious-minded individuals will pay so that eliminates people who are just browsing & bothering.
