What does SMS mean? It stands for Short Messages System which is a method of sending text messages to and from cellular phones using ICQ. The cell phone user must have an active SMS service in order to receive the message. You must have ICQ 2000b version in order to use SMS.

There are three ways to send/receive SMS with ICQ:

  • From/to your ICQ Contact List
  • From/to the ICQ Web site
  • From your email program

From/To Your ICQ Contact List
There are 3 methods for sending messages using your Contact List. The first way is to select the name and choose SMS Message on the drop down menu. The second way is to select the Services button at the bottom of the Contact the List and this will enable you to send a message to someone who is not on your list. The third way is to click on the SMS icon on the ICQ Quick bar at the top of the Contact List. A screen will appear where you enter the SMS number of the person you are messaging and choose Add/Edit Cellular Number. Then enter your message (160 characters maximum) in the Message Text area and then press Send. You will then receive notification when the recipient receives the message.

From/To the ICQ Web Site
You can set up a SMS Box on the ICQ web site so you can send and receive messages. The box requires your ICQ number and password as a login. Once into your box, press the Send button. The Send SMS page appears where you fill in the recipient’s country code and cell number. Type your message (160 character maximum) and click the Send button. The SMS Box allows you to send and receive messages from any PC where you have ICQ installed.

From Your Email Program
First, make sure your email program is an allowable gateway. Open your email program and enter the recipient’s cell phone number in the To field using the country code & phone number (including area code) plus @icqsms.com. Type in your message in the body area of your email screen and then press Send. The recipient will receive the message on his/her cell phone.

      e.g. +42 4199667845@icqsms.com

Hint: If the recipient is not an ICQ user, he can add him/her to your ICQ Contact List. Use the Add/Invite Users function and select the Add Non ICQ Contact option.

The recipient is able to reply to your message using the instructions provided by his/her cell phone manufacturer.
