Lawyer Cartoons: Stu's Views© Stu Rees
Who doesn't love a good lawyer cartoon? I'm a lawyer, and I know I do (as do most lawyers). And I think I can safely say that everyone who hates lawyers loves lawyer cartoons.
After years of watching from the sidelines of cartooning (see bio below), I've jumped into the cartooning world by launching a lawyer cartoon web site at http://www.stus.com Starting April Fools Day 2002 (how appropriate), I began running a new lawyer cartoon each day. My qualifications to be a lawyer cartoonist are as good as anyones: I am an entertainment lawyer who specializes in representing visual arts creators (particularly cartoonists) and writers. My clientele is involved in a wide range of fields, including comic strip syndication, editorial cartoons, comic books, greeting cards, animation, illustration, licensing, text feature syndication and book publishing. Most notably, I represent more than 100 creators in their negotiations with the major comic strip syndicates. Prior to beginning solo practice in May 1999, I worked for the prominent Boston-based law firm Bingham Dana LLP. My practice focused on trademark, licensing and computer law. The web site www.StarvingArtistsLaw.com is my effort to collect and organize quality self help legal information for artists and writers. Among the many web links and books are my own articles about copyright, trademark, and syndication issues. The key resource I wrote is my 120-page law school thesis on contracts between cartoonists and newspaper syndicates (see the "Syndication" link). I am a lifelong fan of newspaper comics, and have maintained an extensive Web site devoted to comic strips (www.stus.com/index2.htm) since 1996. I co-created weekly cartoons for my law school newspaper, but it wasn't until early 2002 that I began cartooning in earnest. I graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School. Prior to law school, I worked for two years at an investment management company and studied finance and portfolio management. I live in San Diego with my lovely wife and cranky cat. Go To Page: 1
