Editorial cartoons about this event seem to have far greater weight than would ordinarily be the case, even for a similarly enormous issue. Why? Well, a key part of the attack was to destroy buildings that symbolize America, and to kill people who symbolize our best and brightest. In other words, this is a battle over national symbols. It is no wonder that editorial cartoonists' commentary by symbols better captures our feelings about the atrocity than written words.
