Ann Telnaes Wins the Pulitzer for Editorial Cartoons

© Stu Rees

Ann Telnaes of Tribune Media Services won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartoons. The winning portfolio is available at http://www.pulitzer.org/year/2001/editor...

One thing I particularly like about Ann's work is that her style is somewhat distinct. The cartoons are nicely drawn, but they are also relatively simple. This allows her to communicate largely through the image rather than with extensive text. These differences don't make her work necessarily better than that of others, but it is nice to see something a bit different.

Interestingly, Ann is one of the few editorial cartoonists in the country who is nationally syndicated by a major company but does not work on the staff of a newspaper. Were I to guess, I would bet on the newspaper job offers rolling in now.

Before beginning her career as an editorial cartoonist, Telnaes worked at Warner Bros. and Walt Disney Imagineering. She has been an animator and layout designer for various animation studios in London, Los Angeles, Taiwan and New York. Check out the rest of her biography: http://www.pulitzer.org/year/2001/editor...
