Original CATHY Submissions

© Laura Kraus

This is a note for both "Cathy" fans and aspiring cartoonists. The Cathy Web site has a series of the original submissions by the cartoonist when she was seeking to sell her strip to a syndicate. The good news for aspiring cartoonists is that sometimes the syndicates see promise in a really bad submission package (you should the "artwork" — blech!!). The key to its getting syndicated was that the strip had an idea, it stood for something, and the character was well articulated and believable. These are the things missing from most aspiring cartoonists' portfolios today.

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt this strip would have gotten five seconds of attention were it submitted today.

You should also check out the rest of the full-service Cathy web site. It offers a good archive of cartoons, some merchandise, and an overview of both the strip and the cartoonist.
