Superman Movie Set! My Rant on Retro Characters
It was announced Thursday, Sep 26 that Brett Ratner will direct a Superman movie slated for theatres summer of 2004. Jon Peters is the Producer for Warner Brothers and word is that pre-production will start immediately with an eye toward shooting in April or May of 2003. Zorianna Kit of the Hollywood Reporter stated, "The project, written by J.J. Abrams, is being billed as a reimagination of the Superman legend based on the DC Comics classic character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Abrams' script was written as part of a trilogy with an elated Ratner already declaring, "the two sequels I hope to direct as well." The announcement comes a month after the studio halted preproduction on the dark "Batman vs. Superman" and turned its attention to the more hopeful "Superman." Originally, "Charlie's Angels" helmer McG was expected to direct the latter project, but because the studio wanted to move forward immediately, McG had to step down because he is working on "Charlie's Angels 2." Cathy Dunkel of Variety writes "It's been a dream since I was a child to do this movie," Ratner told Daily Variety. "I was born to make this movie. It's the perfect time to make this movie, as everyone is looking for someone to save the world, and who better than Superman?" Ratner added he plans to follow "Superman" with "Rush Hour 3" for New Line. He had also been in negotiations to direct the Philip K. Dick adaptation "Paycheck" for Paramount but later fell off that picture. ============================== Thundercats #0 and #1 from Wildstorm/DC has sold out. Also the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen from DC has also sold out. CrossGen is planning a third compendium to go along with FORGE and EDGE. The new Compendium will be called "Caravan" and is planned for sometime in 2003. Rumor has it that Venom is set to return in Ultimate Spider-Man late this year or early next year. ==================== My Rant: 1970's and 1980's retro seems to be hot in the comic book world. Transformers have returned with a vengeance. In my humble opinion, Transformers was always a better toy than a story. Doug Moench with Paul Gulacy is reviving Shang Chi, the self-styled "Master of Kung Fu' under the Marvel Max title. Thundercats are back. And He-Man is back too. And GI Joe is making his return in a big way. The comics and the dol..er..action figures are back with retail dominance. (I wonder - Can the video Games be far behind?)
