Spider-Man and Free Comics Follow-Up. Kevin Smith at MegaCon ConclusionBefore I continue with the talk by Kevin Smith, Here's some news bits for this week: The "Spider-Man" movie that opened May 3rd reported a three-day gross revenue of $114 million, smashing the previous record of $90 million set by Harry Potter. Saturday revenue set a record with the movie bringing in $43 million. Reviews I have seen generally give the movie "Good" to "Very good" grades, but not great. I guess this is to be expected. We're talking Stan Lee here, not Shakespeare. It's supposed to be fun, easy to follow, and personal but not too deep. As best I heard it, director Sam Rami got the story right. Those that rated the movie on the web gave it a little better than 4 out of 5. A reviewer in a local newspaper gave it 3.5 out of 4. So the ratings are pretty consistent. No, I personally have not seen the movie yet. You can't judge by me - I waited for the X-Men movie to get to video. It appears the "Spider-Man" movie benefited greatly from "Free Comic Book Day". The real question is 'Did the comic book retailers and publishers benefited from the movie and the promotions?' I know my wallet is lighter. But I am not typical of the folks the industry is trying to draw in. ====================================== This is Kevin Smith's talk at MegaCon continued from last week. [Editor's note - usually this report is from Kevin's point of view. The exception is when Kevin is telling the 'Dogma' story I want to clearly delineate which is Kevin telling what he said, and which is Kevin telling what the news person said] . This week I continue, and conclude my report on Kevin Smith's talk at MegaCon 2002. This continues from last week on the opening of Kevin's movie the subject of "Tim Burton" Audience Question on if Tim Burton hates his guts? Kevin - Does Tim Burton hate may guts? I don't know, does he? It would seem so based on his quote in the press. I assume he meant it tongue-in-cheek. [Editor's note - Kevin goes on to explain that he read that Tim said] Tim Burton - Anyone who knows me knows I don't read comics, I especially don't read anything by Kevin Smith. I think I'll use that on a book jacket. That's okay Tim Burton can't tell a story worth a damn. Audience Question on "Lord of the Rings' movie
