Free Comic Book Day! Kevin Smith at MegaCon 2002 Pt 3

Before I continue with the talk by Kevin Smith, Here's some news bits for this week:

The Spider-Man live action movie opens today! Check you local paper for the theatre near you. It looks like this one will be very big.

In conjunction with the Spider-Man movie, the comic book publishers are giving away FREE comic books on Saturday May 4th (tomorrow). Free Comic Books include "Star War Tales - A Jedi's Weapon" by Dark Horse; "Justice League Adventures" by DC; "Tomb Raider ½" by Image; "Ultimate Spider-Man #1" by Marvel. Check with your local comic book shop for details.

Word is that CrossGen will definitely not be participating in this event, as they consider it a one-day gimmick that it may temporarily bring in new readers and but not permanently add customers to comic books sales.

[Editor's note - usually this report is from Kevin's point of view. The exception is when Kevin is telling the 'Dogma' story I want to clearly delineate which is Kevin telling what he said, and which is Kevin telling what the news person said] .

This week I continue my report on Kevin Smith's talk at MegaCon 2002. This continues from last week on the opening of Kevin's movie "Dogma".

Audience question on the Kevin Smith movie Dogma

Kevin - (There was a large planned Christian protest) when the movie "Dogma" came out. So when "Dogma" was coming out I called Byron and we got big pieces of cardboard and we got markers, crayons, paints, sparklies and (made a protest sign) and we both pulled up (to where the protest for the movie opening was taking place.

The average age of (the protesters) was 55 and there were about 15 people in two lines. We joined the lines next to a woman with a crucifix (and a rosary). I tried to protest the movie.

News cameras pull up disappointed that there were not 1500 people. (audience laughs) I get a (laugh) every time I tell that

(So the new person comes over to me and asks) 'Are you him? No. That's him. You're the guy (that made the movie)."

No, I get that a lot.

News - 'So why are you here protesting'

Kevin - 'They said the movie was bad.'

News - 'So you wouldn't pay to see it?'

Kevin - No.

News - 'What's your name?'

Kevin - 'Bryan Smith'

News - 'So are you him? Do you have a wallet?'

Kevin - 'No'
