Free Comics Day! More on Kevin Smith at MegaCon

© Robert Smithers

Before I continue with the talk by Kevin Smith, Here's some news bits for this week:

The Spider-Man live action movie opens May 3rd! Check you local paper for the theatre near you. It looks like this one will be very big.

In conjunction with the Spider-Man movie, the comic book publishers are giving away FREE comic books on Saturday May 4th. These are not old quarter comic s but special editions of Ultimate Spider-Man #1, JLAdventures #1, a new Star Wars book, and about a dozen other comics printed just for this event. Check with your local comic book shop for details.

Word from Coliseum of Comics at http://www.coliseumofcomics.com reports that Kevin Smith has signed an exclusive contract with Marvel. Smith will begin writing Amazing Spider-Man sometime late this year or early 2003. Smith stated that he's still interested in doing the DC Brave & Bold series but that it will now have to wait until the exclusive contract is over - 1 or 2 years that is.

What about J. Michael Straczynski? The Kevin Smith news leaves Mr. Straczynski, who also just signed an exclusive contract, without a book. Not so says Marvel as Straczynski will be writing a new Spider-Man title and will be keeping JRJR as his artist. No schedule has been set as of yet but will likely depend on Smith turning in enough scripts to keep Amazing Spider-Man on schedule. Straczynski will also be writing a Babylon 5 graphic novel, a few one-shots, and then presenting Marvel with a complete proposal to play with the Marvel Universe of characters.

Thanks to Coliseum of Comics for this news!

Now, back to Kevin's talk at MegaCon 2002 on February 23, 2002 continued from last week. From here on I'll report what Kevin said from his point of view.

Audience Question on Stan Lee (as he appeared in "Mall Rats")

Kevin - (Stan) Lee is nothing like the character he plays. He is very, very serious.

Audience Question on Spider-Man/Black Cat

Kevin - The outline for Spider-Man/Black Cat is done. It's just sitting on my laptop.

Audience Question on what the most important part of a film is.

Kevin - I think writing makes the film for me. (pause) I have a film (Audience laugh).

Audience Question on upcoming movie on Marvel's "Daredevil" character.

Kevin - (This is a true story) Mark Stephen Johnson (who is to produce the Daredevil movie) asked me who I thought would be good as Daredevil. I told him I thought Ben Affleck would be good in the role. In the meantime, I was scheduled to start filming my movie (Jersey Girl) in April (of 2002 with Ben Affleck). (I got a call from Ben) and he told me that the Daredevil film was scheduled to start filming in April (2002. Ben said) 'I don't want to let you down because I promised I would do your movie first.' I told him 'Dude, if you want to put on red tights and jump on rooftops and that stuff (don't talk to me about my movie).' (And I hung up on him.) We didn't talk to each other after that for about a week. He called me back and said 'I am really trying to do the right thing here. If you really want me to do your movie, I'll call the Marvel people and tell them to give the role to someone else and do you movie because I promised you first' I said "No, dude, it's okay'. He said 'It's a 50 million dollar movie and it's a great opportunity and I'll give it all up on your say so. - So tell me Kevin what do you want me to do? And...you aren't even done with the script, are you?' (Audience laughs as Kevin tells that Ben realized Kevin was joking with him).
