Great Comics in Stores Now!

This week a special treat! No web sites. No review of "Tomb Raider" that opened last week and is raking in the dollars.

Okay, okay. - A quick note on Tomb Raider. Reviews are mixed. Some say it is hard to care about characters that came from a video game. They are difficult to take seriously. Some like the action sequences. Some like to view Angela Jole. Expect lots of computer bad guys.

Back to this week's theme. It snuck up on me - but here it is. There are good comic books in the shops RIGHT NOW! Huh? What? You thought comic books were a dying breed. Well, it looks like the publishers realize this, and have pulled out the most incredible gimmick of all - "Quality". That's right. In a bid to revive a new age in comics, publishers are turning out good books! Good writers. Solid Art. Good production values. Plastic paper that lasts longer and spoils less. Computer colors and letters that "leap" off the page.

Personally, I do not buy a lot of new comics right now, I think it is due to the fact that I bought a number of new titles weekly in the late 1980's and early 1990's - and I have seen their value drop to less than I paid for them. Hey, a book bought new for $1.25 in the 1980's is lucky if someone will pay you $1.00 for it today. And trying to keep it in top condition means redoing the bag and board every couple of years. I have only a few books that are still in top condition. Most are average to above average, and I am still struggling to keep them that way.

Okay, Robert, enough complaining. Give us the scoop.

Here are some comic books recommended by my email pals:

Mike from "Journey Into Comics" fame (See KDS Comics web site for columns) says that "Iron Man" has been excellent lately. He also recommends "Authority", "Monarchy" and "Planetary". My Opinion? I'm not big on the Wildstorm titles. Too dark and paranoid for me. I see that "Authority" is written by Tom Peyer, and excellent writer. Doselle Young writes "Monarchy", with art by Joel McCrea and Gary Leach. Warren Ellis writes "Planetary". I read once that this book is about life on this planet, and I assume that it is written from Warren's unique perspective.

Speaking of Wildstorm, for those of you suffering from Star Trek withdrawals Wildstorm is currently publishing a new monthly "Star Trek" comic
