Lost in Space - Jonathan Harris at Megacon 1998 - Part II

[Audience Question] Are you going to be in the new Lost in Space movie?

I am not in the new movie. I have no opinion about it. I turned it down three times when they offered. I declined to appear in what they offered; which they laughingly refer to as a cameo. I can recognize a *&%^$^&ing bit when I see one. And I said no. And they came back. They always come back. Have no pride at all. [Audience laugh] And I said no. I've said no. And then the director who is a very nice man Stephen Hopkins...I've met him. He arrived strangely enough with some caveats.

[Aside by Jonathon- speaking of himself] I'm the official host for New Line Cinema. The television branch. We don't talk to the movie branch. The man who I work for I adore, is a lovely man straightforward and a gentleman, and we get along beautifully and I go to all of the events all over the country..

So I have met Stephen Hopkins at one of the events the director of the movie. A very nice man of course. And when he realized that I turned him down - twice. Why do they want me in the movie? My face, in the movie, is worth a million dollars of publicity. And I wasn't about to give it to them. So Mr. Hopkins called from London. Twice. He called once and I declined to talk. So he called again. So I talked to him this time.

And he said 'What can I do or say to convince you to be in my movie'

'There is nothing you can do and even less you can say. I am not going to be in your movie'

'Oh please, please, please'

Of course I was hip to the whole number, you see. And he said" What can I do is there something I can do?'

I said 'You need me to play six lines?' "In about that tone of voice.

'I will write the part bigger'

'Oh, ever hear of the scissors?'

'Oh', he said, 'You've been around too long'

'Longer than you. I'll end up with the same stupid six lines'. And I said 'And I'm to long in the tooth to start playing bits. I never have, and I'm not about to start now' "

He said 'Please'

'And I said 'No.no. I want you to know that
