Review of "Ultimate Spider-Man #4" and "Anomaly #2"

with only slight super-powers twist. Excellent story.

"The Sincerest Form of Flattery" written by Raymond E. Brown, pencils by Felipe Chow.

An obvious rip-off story of human oddities (i.e. Marvel's X-Men) with extreme prejudice gone wrong. The kindest thing I can say is that I did not care for it. The story and art tries to be cute, but ends up mean-spirited.

"Best Friends" and "Are you Ready to Rumble?" and "The Big Score" by Johnny Lowe

Nice art and, uh, interesting story. It looks like "The Simpsons" inspired it, as it has implied and graphic physical injury. I liked the art (very Simpson's Bongo Comic like). Much of the details for the story you imagined (you fill in the blanks between panels with your imagination). This is a difficult story technique. Kudos for trying, but the stories fell short for me.

"Hero is a Four Letter Word" story by Dennis Shumate, pencils by Seaward Tuthill

Interesting story of a private detective that gets involved with people who turn out to have super-powers. Comparable to "Damage Control' by Marvel. It deals with the concept of who cleans up the mess after superheroes, and what if they go bad?

"The Hitch" story and pencils by Dan Hoagland.

Dan has an interesting pencils style. Reminds me of the style of "Valiant" comics in the early 1990's, but not quite as polished. Story is interesting too. Overall good, but needs something I can't put my finger on. With a little mentoring, I think Dan could be pretty good.

"Upgrade" story by Johnny Lowe, pencils by Richard Garcia

Yeah, another lame and predicable story. The art was interesting; good but lacks the quality in the details. For example, faces are pretty good, but the chin on the face is not quite right. Keep improving!

"A Christmas Story" story by Caleb Gerard, pencils by Filip Sablik

Fascinating story of a man named Gary who dies but whose spirit is still wondering the earth. Gary wonders what happened in his life to bring him this situation. He meets his spirit "guide", but the guide is kind of an old Denis Miller type - all talk and little information. ("Not hear to answer your moronic questions - so don't bother") The story leaves you anxious for part 2, just to see what is going on! The art is good. Good figures, and skimpy on the backgrounds.

That's all for this week. God bless and have a safe
