I am going to start a series of editorials on newsgroups related to comics. Specifically I am going to concentrate on the FAQs related to these newsgroups. (FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions)
The main place for comic related material on the web is rec.arts.comics.* newsgroups. (where the * represents additional folders or directories in the rec.arts.comics group.) rec.arts.comics is abbreviated as r.a.c. or RAC
A tremendous amount of information related to comic books can be found on the comic related newsgroups. In my opinion, many newsgroups are filled with people with inane comments and 'gimme' and 'me too' attitudes and posts. RAC is no exception. However, so many FAQs have sprung up around RAC that the FAQs often contain better and more accurate information than the newsgroups themselves. As general rule, always read a newsgroups' FAQ prior to posting an article in the group. The FAQ may contain information on etiquette on the net (etiquette), allowable posts, if a group is moderated or not, etc. I am going to attempt to list the names of the FAQs and where they can be found on the internet. I will also give you my opinion of the FAQ. I will try to take them from the most general to the most specific. My comments on these FAQs is after the single horizontal line. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Welcome to RAC! group intro. -- http://www.idyllmtn.com/rac/uber/group-i... A good, brief list of the newsgroups found in RAC. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ General Comics FAQ -- http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~fuy1/comics/ What is NOT in this FAQ? Where are comics pros/companies on the net? and in the real world? Where is the nearest/best comic store? Where is the nearest/best comic convention? How do I become a pro comics writer or artist? Where does the money go from buying a comic? Where can I get GIFs or other scanned comics art? Who is Suicide Squid? _________________________________________________________________________________ This general FAQ is an excellent place to start if you want to find internet information on becoming an artist or writer. Also good breakdown of where the money you pay for a comic goes. This FAQ reminds us the scanned pictures of copyrighted material are ILLEGAL. This is one reason there is so little comic art on the web. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Introduction to RAC* Newsgroups -- http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~fuy1/comics/ Why Should I Read This FAQ?
