The Xeric Foundation has announced its most recent grant recipients. A total of $25,942 was awarded to six comic book creators. The Foundation has awarded in excess of $641,000 to comic book creators and non-profit organizations since its first grant cycle in September 1992.

Established by Peter Laird, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Northampton, MA based foundation offers financial assistance to self-publishing comic book creators nationwide and qualified charitable and nonprofit organizations in western Massachusetts. Unfortunately, artists outside the United States are not at this time eligible to apply. The current grants cover the six-month period beginning February 1, 1997, and ending July 31, 1997. The next deadline and review dates are January 31, 1998 and March 1, 1998. The charitable organization grants were decided in June 1997 and announced separately.

The artists receiving grants are as follow:

Sarah Thornton - Cilla

Fred Hofheinz and Lance Miller - Paper & Binding

Kevin Quigley - Big Place Comics

Fawn Gehweiler - Bomb Pop

Robert Kirby - Curbside

Thanks Bebe! Refreshing that a former unknown independent (Peter Laird) would spend his time and effort promoting other independents. Kudos Peter!
