MegaCon 2000 PicturesMegaCon continued, with the Saturday Afternoon trivia contest with $5000 in charity money at stake. The first team consisted of John Romita, Roy Thomas, and Stan Lee. (The old farts) The opponents were Michael Turner, Ron Marz and Garth Ennis (The young and not-so-young punks). During a break in before the contest the punks readied themselves by signing a few autographs. Prior to the the contest, Stan, when asked for a comment, said "We're going to win!". An early contest question about the first appearance of a Marvel character, Stan quickly quipped "I wrote that one!" The contest continued with fairly easy question, but an occasional hard one. It became apparant that Ron Marz answered more than his share of answers on the Punks side, espeically when the others could not come up with an answer. On the Old Farts side, they turned to Roy Thomas to take a guess when no one when esle would venture a guess. Roy, when he and Stan agreed on an answer, qwipped "Stan said I could get a right answer for a change". With the score twelve for each side, the Old Farts got two more right answers to the Punks one. Each contestant and the moderater got money for their charity, with the winning contestants getting $1000 each and the losers $500 each. Talk about your really big checks! Try depositing these babies in an ATM! Never bet against Stan Lee. At break during the contest I got my picture taken with Ron Marz. Hmmm. Maybe he's my long lost brother? Certainly a resemblance here. Maybe we should get together more often. Hey, we're both writers. Later I stood in line to get a sketch from Bob Layton, and Dave Micheline showed up. And he wasn't even on the guest list! Bob had reproduction of cover art for his and Dave's upcoming Iron Man four issue special. Anyone but me remember that Dave and Bob did Iron Man for like ten years running? Sunday was busy early, and I stood in line to get an autograph from Stan Lee. Something you may not know - Stan was born in 1922, which makes him 77 or 78. He still looks strong, fit, quick witted, and fast walking. He has lots of trainers and a security guard. And he's left handed. Stan was schedule to give a talk on his website after the signing. He never showed, and no MegaCon personnel cam by or announced the schedule change. Rasberries to you MegaCon folks. In an otherwise great convention, this was the only black eye I saw.
