Tangent Comics For one week in October, the DC UNIVERSE suspends publication of its regular titles, instead publishing nine extra-sized one-shot specials that take place in a universe where things are very different: the world of TANGENT COMICS. During TANGENT WEEK, no regular DC UNIVERSE books will be published, giving readers an unparalleled opportunity to sample these brand-new characters, much like the AMALGAM events. While each book can stand on its own, the nine issues, taken together, reveal an exciting range of characters and styles in a thoroughly fleshed-out world. With titles like THE FLASH, GREEN LANTERN, NIGHTWING and DOOM PATROL, readers may think they know what to expect, but with some of the most talented writers and artists in comics on board, they are going to be very pleasantly surprised. Inspired by Dan Jurgens (SUPERMAN, TEEN TITANS), the world of TANGENT COMICS is a world very different from our own. It's a world where the 1960s debut of a nuclear-powered hero called The Atom ushered in a new age of hi-tech invention; where the Cuban Missile Crisis accelerated into an atomic conflagration that destroyed both Cuba and Florida; and where a covert organization known to a select few as NIGHTWING has its eyes and ears in every home, even in the Oval Office. Each TANGENT COMICS title is a 48-page book in the Miraweb Format, edited by Eddie Berganza. All 9 titles THE ATOM #1, DOOM PATROL #1, THE FLASH #1, GREEN LANTERN #1, THE JOKER #1, METAL MEN #1, NIGHTWING #1, SEA DEVILS #1, and THE SECRET SIX #1 arrive in comic-book stores October 1, each with a cover price of $2.95 U.S.
Editor's Commnet: I'm DYING here!!!! I can't take this crossover/re-origin mish/mash. First Amalgam OK, I can take Amalgam the joke. Then Amalgam II, well OK, but the novelty has worn off. Then Marvel/DC Access, a spin off of Amalgam! Access was goofy, but had some interesting charater interaction. A few years ago, Image spoofs the Mavel Universe with their "1963" series of one-shots. Now, DC remakes itself in the style of "What if the earth's 1960's history took place NOW, and was in today's hard-edge let's-blow-up-lots-of-people-in-some-minor-disasters theme? Not to mention the current "pocket universe" storyline at Marvel with Captain America, Iron Man, etc. As a long-time comic book reader, I really am disappointed that companies think they need to "manufacture" events. The old Marel series of "What If" comics appealed to a specific, but small, group of comic book enthusiasts. This is the "What If" series taken to the extreme. I personally perfer long time frames and long-running series. The subtle variations of a continuous stroy line like Peter David's ten-year continuous run on Incredible Hulk have much more validity than the "make-money-now" gimmick currently employed by publishers. The constant gimmicks by Marvel, DC and Image make Topps tie-ins to movies and TV shows tame by comparison. Go To Page: 1 2
