Comic Book Web Sites - News and Information Sites

© Robert Smithers

Continuing my discussion of last week, I am going to list some comic related sites under Catagory 2. This is the category I call 'News, Previews and Reviews', and it contains all kind of general information on comics.

Now this editorial has an audience participation element to it! I want you to visit these sites, and tell me what you think! Please respond with discussion following this article. Thanks.

The first site I suggest you visit is The Comic Shop News This is the same folks that bring you that free newspaper previews at your local comic retail speciality store. The site is pretty good. I think the structure is a little confusing, but I like that cool yellow background. They recently added part of their preview news online, which is nice. My biggest complaint is that many of their links are out of date, and no longer work.

The second site I suggest you check out is The Comics Journal These folks have tons of news on publishers- especially on small publishers like Kitchen Press. They are the leader in investigative journalism! How do I know this? They state this as fact - right on the web page! Seriously, they do seem to have some interesting, information on the goings on in the small press arena. When you see the trouble these folks have, it may make you think twice about self-publishing.

Speaking of good information on comic publishing, maybe the best web site on this subject is called The Comic Creators (or Cerebus the Gopher). Why it's called 'Cerebus the Gopher' - hey, I may never know. But this is great stuff if you have ever thought of submitting artwork or stories to comic publishers. Also an nice guide on drawing artwork for comics and on self-publishing. There is one major rule in self-publishing- don't get Diamond Distributors upset at you. (Sorry - comic industry joke). Only fallback is that it's kind of a goofy site that can be confusing to navigate.

On the history of comics, a good site is Gemstone Publishing Comic Book Guide. This site is not specifically related to comics, but does have some good comic information on the Platinum Age of Comics. This site also has good explanation on why comic grading is so important.

Finally we come to The Comic Archives. This site was created by a collector who invests in Golden Age comics. Here you will find an excellent explaination of the Golden Age of comics, comic timelines, and an special emphasis on the Justice Society of America.
