Comic Book Web Sites - Rumblings

I have long thought about the myriad of comic book related sites on the web, and their vast variety.

I try to keep a representational cross section of these sites on the list of the top twenty five here at suite 101. I try to include small site, large sites, and sites on a variety of subjects. However, many worthy sites remain for you to ferret out. There are some excellent reference to a variety of sites. Jonah's Resources offers a large variety of sites, while KDS Comics offers an excellent selection of 100 or so sites.

A long time ago on Suite 101, I suggested that there are four different types of comic book related sites on the web. That article may still be muddled in the article archive, but I think many of the thoughts bear revisiting. I now categorize five different types of comic related web sites.

In other words, I think that the comic related sites on the web can be grouped in five general catagories.

1) The first catagory is also the most scare. It is truely the "Comic Book" on the web. This is similar to the interactive comic book on CD ROM that you can buy at your local retail store. But the real "interactive" part is limited by the the programs on the web. These pages can be scanned graphics, computer graphics, or can be interactive with additional programs like Macromedia or Java. The interactive programs significantly slow the time needed to download these pages. And, unfortunately, the better the resolution of the picture, the slower it will download. So it is a significant task to place a comic book on the web that has a reasonable download time.

2) The second category is the corporate site. These sites are produced by comic book publishers, distributors, studios, etc. These sites tend to be excellent on the technical aspects of the web, but they are also self-promoting. As long as you understand that they are self-promoting, that's okay.

3) The third type of site I call 'News, Previews, and Reviews.' These sites include the magazine publishers, price guide folks, and many folks out there archiving their reviews on the web. This type also includes 'How to' sites, that give individuals insights into how to submit material to comic book publishers, where to submit, and artwork guides.

4) The fourth type of web site is people buying, trading and selling comics! There are simply too many of these folks to list - from the major regional retailers to any individual who can put up 10 comics on their site.
