DC Comics Voted No. 1 Comic Book Publisher of the Century
NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1999--DC Comics was named the Favorite Publisher of the Century by the readers of Comics Buyer's Guide, the comics industry's preeminent weekly news publication.
The award is a result of a poll conducted of comics fans and professionals that named DC #1 by an overwhelming margin of voters. DC, including its various sub-imprints such as Vertigo, MAD Magazine and WildStorm Productions, laid claim as the favorite of 46.4% of all CBG readers, 31.3% of comics professionals, and 49.1% of general fandom, leaving competitor Marvel Comics a distant second.
Maggie Thompson, editor of Comics Buyer's Guide, said, ``Over the history of comics, DC has supplied a firm foundation for the field. Its characters and publications have provided the ongoing face by which the public knows comic books.''
Paul Levitz, DC's Executive Vice President & Publisher said ``We're proud to be recognized for the creative accomplishments of DC and our legendary writers, artists, and characters over the past decades. We look forward to continuing to entertain our readers in the new millennium.''
In addition, the limited series WATCHMEN was announced as ``Favorite Limited Comic-Book Series of the Century'' in CBG #1355. WATCHMEN, the only comics project to win science fiction's prestigious Hugo Award, is available in a one volume collected trade paperback edition ($19.95 at comic book specialty shops and bookstores).
DC's Batman was announced as ``Favorite Comic-Book Character of the Century'' in CBG #1356, with DC's Superman ranking as the #2 vote-getter.
Other CBG Fan Awards of the Century will be announced one category per week in upcoming issues of Comics Buyer's Guide over the next several months.
