HOLLYWOOD (Variety) 'Ghost' In The Works by Dade Hayes and Chris Petrikin - Rising teen stars Leelee Sobieski and Thora Birch are in talks to play major roles in ``Ghost World,'' a low-budget picture based on a comic novella.

Terry Zwigoff, best known for his 1994 comic-themed documentary ``Crumb,'' will direct the live-action film from a script by himself and novella creator Daniel Clowes.

Clowes has described ``Ghost World'' as a look at ``the lives of two recent high school graduates from the advantaged perch of a constant and (mostly) undetectable eavesdropper, with the shaky detachment of a scientist who has grown fond of the prize microbes in his petri dish.''

Shooting on the United Artists project is set to begin in February. The budget is between $5 million and $6 million.

Sobieski, Emmy-nominated this year for her title role in the CBS miniseries ``Joan of Arc,'' has appeared in films such as ''Never Been Kissed,'' ``Eyes Wide Shut'' and ``Deep Impact.''

Birch is currently in theaters as the daughter of Kevin Spacey's character in ``American Beauty.'' She's also had roles in ``Patriot Games'' and ``Clear and Present Danger.''

Clowes has gained fame in recent years with his popular comic book ``Eightball,'' in which ``Ghost World'' segments have appeared. He drew the one-sheet poster for Todd Solondz's 1998 picture ``Happiness,'' and got noticed for penning comics for an unlikely outlet: Esquire magazine.
