Gaiman's devoted following in the comics and fantasy fields combined with Amano's incredible popularity with gamers guarantees a large and enthusiastic turnout for this event. Over seven million copies of The Sandman have been sold in periodical and book editions plus uncounted millions of editions in nine other languages. The Sandman: The Dream Hunters, the first Sandman story since the series finale in 1996, is a hardcover graphic novel published by DC Comics' Vertigo line. It is opulently told in an illustrated text format combining Gaiman's lyrical prose with Amano's lush, full-page paintings. Gaiman, whose best-selling comic-book series The Sandman established a new level in graphic storytelling, also wrote the English-language adaptation of the animated film Princess Mononoke, Japan's highest grossing film of all time, which makes its New York debut on October 29. He also has written the popular prose novels Neverwhere and Stardust. Amano, a highly prolific multimedia artist known for his video-game design (Final Fantasy), animation work (G-Force, Hutch the HoneyBee, The Angel's Egg), and fantasy illustrations (Vampire Hunter D, 1001 Nights), makes his American comics debut with this book.
