X-MEN TO BEGIN PRODUCTION IN SEPTEMBER New York - June 10, 1999 - Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment announced today that production is scheduled to begin in September on X-MEN, the epic live-action film adaptation of the legendary Marvel comic. Ian McKellan, who was Oscar-nominated for his starring role in Gods and Monsters will portray the villainous Magneto, the ultimate foe of the heroic X-Men, mutants who use their powers for the good of both humans and mutants. Patrick Stewart, best known for his work as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek: The Next Generation series and three subsequent Star Trek films, is Professor X, the founder and backbone of the X-Men and one-time friend to Magneto. Wrestler Tyler Mane has been cast as Sabretooth, an evil mutant who often associates with Magneto and whose sworn enemy is Wolverine. Additional casting is underway for such roles as Wolverine, Jean Grey, Storm and Cyclops. The film is directed by Bryan Singer, whose credits include the Oscar-nominated The Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil, which starred Ian McKellan. The screenplay is by Ed Solomon (Men in Black) and Christopher McQuarrie, an Oscar-winner for Best Original Screenplay for The Usual Suspects. The producers are Lauren Shuler Donner (You've Got Mail) and Ralph Winter (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, InspectorGadget). X-MEN is based on the legendary Marvel comic series, which debuted nearly four decades ago, and remains one of the best sellers in the entire world, with over 400 million books sold since its inception. Avi Arad, President and Chief Executive Officer, Marvel Media and Director and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel Enterprises, Inc., commented, "We are delighted to be collaborating with Twentieth Century Fox on this much anticipated film which will surpass the expectations of X-Men fans, as well as appeal to a vast film audience of all ages andinterests."
