Pokémon - Gotta Catch 'em All...In case you have been living under a rock for the past few months, the second biggest thing to hit the entertainment market this spring (after Star Wars) has been Pokémon. Here's a primer from the Viz Comuunication web site at www.viz.com. (Note - This is so big, I am adding a link to this site from list of links!) Welcome to the VIZ Communications' Pokémon site! Story: GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL! 1998's video game hit is now available as anime and manga! [Sorry to break in for a word of explanation: anime is Japanese animation - cartoons for television, if you will. Manga is a Japanise style comic book. It usually has a color cover and black and white pages inside.] Originating in Japan as a Nintendo Game Boy role-playing video game, the 150 extraordinary, collectible creatures of Pokémon quickly exploded into music, clothing, manga, and an animated TV series; over a year after its first appearance, the original game was still on Top Ten sales charts. The Pokémon anime and manga series tell the story of 10-year-old Ash (and his loveable Pokémon Pikachu) as he tries to become the World's Greatest Pokémon Trainer. Together Ash and Pikachu travel the world searching for new Pokémon, and new challenges. Well - I would say the "travels the world" is a little too broad a term. "Hikes through the wildernss of Japan" would be more like it. Hey - the kids are only ten years old! How far can they walk?! The next subdivision seems like "the world" when you are ten! Now, with Viz Communications, you can bring home the television series as home videos and you can read the Pokémon manga - Ash and Pikachu's all new adventures in the Pokémon world. I hope now you understand what all those elementary school kids are talking about! And try buying the collectible card game - NO WAY. The dang thing is sold out coast to coast! The teachers have already banned it from elementary schools - a sure sign of a hit! And if that's not enough - you'll have to shell out for another comic each month to follow all the adventures! Think I'm kidding - read this from Viz.... IF THERE ARE 150 POKÉMON, THERE SHOULD BE A SECOND POKÉMON COMIC! POKÉMON ADVENTURES MONTHLY COMIC SERIES San Francisco, CA (5/21/99)-Viz Comics proudly announces the September 1999 release of Pokémon Adventures, a new comic series featuring all your favorite Pokémon characters! Pokémon Adventures is different from the animated TV series and the other Pokémon comic: they closely follow the story of the original Game Boy game, including plenty of battles and surprises! See Team Rocket as the game's original black-clad, mask-wearing enemies. Watch Ash's adventures with a whole different set of Pokémon, including Poliwhirl and Bulbasaur. And face all the opponents from the game! In addition, Pokémon Adventures is printed in a durable trade paperback format, 48 pages squarebound, with collectible stickers inside each issue.
