Shopping with a ten-year-old relative....

© Robert Smithers

This week I took a ten-year-old relative to a large local comic book store. The few girls' action figures, Disney movie figures, and collector Barbie dolls fascinated her. The she found something she really liked. It was a castle!. A full size She-Ra castle for action figures. The castle was in it's original package; all pink and light purple with a picture of She-Ra in her white costume with her white horse.. The packing box was about three feet long by two wide by 18 inches deep.. I have to say it look extremely appealing.

My ten-year-old relative wanted to know two things. First, how much did it cost. And second, were the action figures pictured on the box included. Sadly, we all know the answer to the second question. The action figures are always sold separately. She asked the lady at the store how much the castle cost. The price was $69.95.

Later, after leaving the store the ten-year-old had to cry a little, because she really wanted that castle, but there was no way she had $69.95. I tried to explain to her that the castle was for collectors, not really for children to play with. . No one made them anymore. That was expensive because it was scarce.

I think she still wants that castle.

I hope you enjoyed this week's more personable story. This story also reminds me of a guy on the internet advertising that he wants Marvel comic book annuals that are still sealed in their original bags. I simply shake my head at this. I fail to see what earthly good a book is sealed up in a bag. I guess it is just because so many are opened, that the sealed ones are unique. If, after he had written his plays, Shakespeare had taken them and put them away in bags for 500 years would we all be enriched by his theatre?

Plays are meant to be performed. Books are meant to be read. And comics should be taken out of their bags and enjoyed.

Just my opinion. Robert

P. S. Anyone got a She-Ra castle for sale inexpensively??? Please drop me a line.
