Super-Soldier: Man of War
Combine two heavyweight characters like Superman and Captain America, and place them in a World War II setting, and throw in the amalgamation of the GI stories from Marvel and DC! What do you get??? I am still not sure what you get from this one. Maybe it suffers from an identity crisis. Maybe it tries too hard to be all things to all people. Maybe it's just a nice amalgamated story in the "WWII" style. I still can't decide. The story premise: Super-Soldier (Clark) goes undercover with his teenage sidekick Jimmy O. (who, instead of fighting Nazis, take pictures!) The hook up with Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos of Easy Company (Okay, you get the joke! Though Dum Dum amalgamated with the Native American from Easy Company does look fetching with feathers in his derby!). Anyway, all finally arrive at the baddies' castle to free a professor and his daughter from the clutches of the Nazis and conflict ensues! This is a nostalgia-soaked story, with elements from lots of old time comics. Most of the story elements work fine, but author brings lots of quirky questions to my mind. Storming an enemy castle with a squadron of armed-to-the-teeth GI's, Jimmy O. is armed with nothing but a camera!?! (Hello! Is Jimmy's brain in?) Why does Super Soldier carry a shield around that has a giant "S" on it (Other than the political-promotions reason? The comic clearly shows that bullets bounce off him. Super Soldier never throws the shield. So, except for reasons of amalgmation, why does he have the shield at all?, Why combine Super Soldier with ordinary soldiers? The ordinary guys merely get in his way! SS could have wrapped up the whole mess if the yahoo GI's hadn't gotten in the way! Okay, I accept the fact that this is a contrived story. The art was excellent and captured that 1940's style! The story was goofy and predictable - but that's to be expected. Okay, time for an overall rating! *** out of ***** (Good) The comic had nice art and a story that got everyone in. I was expecting more, given the characters and the writer, but still an enjoyable, nostalgic comic. =========================================================== JLX Unleashed An amagamation of Marvel's X-men with various characters from the DC Universe. The premise is that the Sentinels have caught and locked up all of the JLX. Now Fin Fang Flame is lose in the world, and the JLA turns to the renegade JLX to save the earth! So the JLA lets the JLX out of the jail. JLX Unleashed, got it? Good. Go To Page: 1 2
