Writing Comics with Barbara Kesel and Marv Wolfman Part 1

Barbara - {When] I write [a comic book, I] paint a series of [pictures]. I write the cover - what is happening in that issue. I put numbers 1 though 22 along the side [of my paper] and put interesting parts of the story on {next to the numbers]. I work through [the story] three ways - plot, arrange onto pages, and what are you looking at over three pages.

Marv - You have to know where the story is going before you start. {In Teen Titans with the character] Terra, we knew she was going to die. [The story may have] a plot twist or change along the way. We knew where the story was going.

Barbara - If you start [knowing] where the story is going, it is a strong story. {But be willing to change, be willing to turn left if it makes a better story].

Marv - [As] a writer [you] need to surprise yourself. Know what you are doing. Know where you are going. Be willing, as Barbara says, to turn left. You need to allow yourself freedom. Be honest to the character [otherwise] it will feel wrong.

Unfortunately this discussion is too long - I'll post the rest of for next week.

Until then, God bless
