Finding the Right Roommates

I had a total of 11 roommates by the time I finished my 4-year college program. Only until my last year did I find the roommate that would be the best match. She was my one of my best friends in high school but we had started college at different schools. So, we were forced to go our separate ways.

During my second year, I moved to Lexington to attend UK where I was looking forward to a new scene with hopes of fun and excitement. My 2 new roommates seemed promising and I was looking forward to the new semester. Boy was I surprised! I ended up being miserable because one of my roommates was 5 years older than me and completely uninterested and the other was loud and obnoxious and stuck me with a $400 phone bill. I moved out the next semester.

The next place I chose to live was with 3 girls who had grown up together. They were each other's best friends and I felt very out of place. We had nothing at all in common and I was lonely. I made the same mistake the following year when I moved in with 3 new girls.

This brings me to my last year of college in which I chose the perfect roommate. My life became much more bearable and I was finally enjoying college! Living with the right person in college will make your life easier! Trust me.

Here are my suggestions for finding the right roommate:

1. It's good to already know this person. Maybe you went to high school with her/him or played a sport with them.

2. Talk to a potential roommate before moving in and find out if their expectations are similar to yours. For example, do they party until 4 a.m. and wake up late for class or do they quietly study on Friday night and flinch when you mention you skipped your Biology class. Whichever the case, you will quickly realize if this person will work out or not.

3. Have someone you know refer a person to you.

If you currently live with someone who is making you crazy, think about an alternative solution and determine if your day will brighten if you don't have to share your place with her/him. You will only experience college once!
