Let's Go Bowling! - Part 2

New Year's Day and New Year's Eve are usually the best two days of the year for college football fans, and this year's bowl games should be no different. These "second-tier" bowl games actually offer some of the more compelling matchups of the post-season, and I'm here to break them all down.

Crucial.com Humanitarian Bowl - Iowa State (7-6) vs. Boise State (11-1)
Dec. 31, 2002, Noon (ESPN) - Boise, ID
Here are two pretty unheralded, pretty good football teams. Boise State's playing on its home blue turf, where their uniforms blend into the field, but who do they have that can match up with Iowa State quarterback Seneca Wallace, arguably the best running quarterback in the country? I don't think that they have anyone. Iowa State has been knocked around a bit later in the season, but I think they'll come through with a big victory here. Big 12: 6-0. WAC: 1-1.

Wells Fargo Sun Bowl - Purdue (6-6) vs. Washington (7-5)
Dec. 31, 2001, 2pm (CBS) - El Paso, TX
Washington is a better team than anyone gives them credit for being, even after they knocked off Washington State in the Apple Cup. Pudue, on the other hand, is yet another Big 10 team that probably doesn't even really deserve to be in a bowl game. Washington quarterback Cody Pickett has broken countless team and conference records despite being overshadowed this year by USC's Carson Palmer. And let's not forget Washington's recent bowl game performances. They're very strong in the post season, and Purdue just doesn't have the firepower to keep up. Pac 10: 2-3. Big 10: 1-2.

AXA Liberty Bowl - Colorado State (10-3) vs. TCU (9-2)
Dec. 31, 2002, 3:30pm (ESPN) - Memphis, TN
This may turn into one of the better games this postseason, as TCU has found a way to stay in every ballgame, and win most of them. Colorado State doesn't really get enough credit in a pretty competetive Mountain West conference that features some pretty good teams (BYU, New Mexico, Air Force, Utah). They did upset Colorado early in the year, though, and their quarterback, Alex van Pelt (A transfer from Michigan State) is as big a playmaker as you'll find. Cecil Sapp, their running back, has arguably the best skills of any running back in the country who doesn't play in Florida. Colorado State wins this one by two scores. Mountain West: 2-0. Conference USA: 0-5.

Silicon Valley Football Classic - Georgia Tech (7-5) vs. Fresno State (8-5)
