TV JavaI was watching one of my favorite television shows last night when one of the lead characters came to his office bearing gifts of two cups of Starbuck's for his coworkers. It made me think of coffee, television and office java. First and foremost, ponder the logistics of Starbucks logo showing up in prime time television. What a clever way to perpetuate the image of coffee connoisseurs. My hat's off to their marketers. Secondly, contemplate with me how often television producers and directors use coffee on their sets to put the audience at ease. If we're not sure about a character's virtues, nothing will set us straight better than seeing a cup of java in his hand. We immediately file him in our 'good guy' folder, don't we! Wonder if that could help in other situations, say a job interview? Lastly, let's talk about office coffee. Doesn't it seem a little strange that my TV hero would show up at his office carrying coffee from an outside source. Isn't that a little bit snobby - I mean really, there must be a coffee pot somewhere in his office. And more than that, isn't there a wonderful soul who made a fresh pot when he hit the office this morning? What does he think when my hero shows up, passes by the offer of a hot cup of office coffee and then goes one more and parades a Starbucks cup around the building? Quick way to make enemies and keep 'em? I know, I know, office coffee isn't really coffee and my hero knows that and has every right to seek out and devour a real cup o' joe. Hence the Starbucks pit stop. But think with me one further, when will office coffee become REAL coffee? When will every Tom, Jane and Harry become enlightened and realize that they too should not have to suffer the pains of drinking burned, mineral-tasting, brown-water office coffee. When will they realize that they too, have every right to their own cup of flavorful, aromatic, perfectly brewed gourmet java. On that day, my friend, coffee shops around the world will celebrate, because on that day, my friend, coffee shops will no longer be a pit stop before the office scene for the chosen few. On that day, coffee shop coffee will be a required admittance pass to every office building in the country!! Think on that will you?
