Places To Scare Up A Great Brew

It's the time of year again for falling leaves, harvesting apples and carving pumpkins. I love the sounds and smells around every corner as I take my afternoon walk. It's absolutely divine.

And we're all getting ready for Halloween parties once again. Know any place to scare up a good cup of coffee and celebrate this haunting season? Follow me and I'll show you the way.

First stop, the Olde Village Beanery Cafe, Salem's only Steaming Witch coffeehouse and espresso cafe! We find this coffeehouse right in the heart of historic Salem, Massachusetts! Can't get much more haunted than that. Wonder if they've served their share of witches?

The café specializes in a great lunch and an authentic, hand-crafted espresso drink! All during the month of October the café becomes a part of Salem's Haunted Happenings Festival. What a great way to celebrate Halloween. "There is something for every member of your family to do during the festivities: parades, psychic fairs, costume balls, haunted houses, tours of Salem's greatest historic sites, and restaurants galore!" And the proceeds from their Mystery Café Dinner Theater, The Altos- Like the Sopranos - only lower!, will go to the NYFD Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows and Children's Fund.

Another spooky coffee stop would be all the way across the country at the Hotel Knickerbocker in Hollywood. It has an incredible history, one that includes hosting dozens of stars, dead and alive. Rudolph Valentino hung out at the hotel bar, Harry Houdini had been interested in the occult here, Epic Film Director D.W. Griffith (Birth of a Nation, Intolerance)died of a stroke on here, real Frances Farmer was arrested in 1942 and dragged half-naked from her room, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Stanwyck, Lana Turner, Mae West, Laurel & Hardy, Larry Fine of the Three Stooges, and Cecil B. DeMille all lived at the Hotel, William Faulkner and Meta Carpenter began their 18-year affair at the Knickerbocker…..should I go on?????

But the most fascinating aspect of all this is that after being closed, boarded up and left unused for almost 25 years , The All-Star Theatre Café & Speakeasy has re-opened as a posh, nostalgic coffee shop! The Café "does its best to bring back the Art Deco glamour of the Roaring 20's - the chandeliers originally belonged to Liberace, and you'll still find a quija board on one of the coffee shop's tables, in honor of Mr. Houdini. You can play pool, backgammon or chess, relax on overstuffed sofas... even find vintage evening gowns and jewelry on the side. And lately the All-Star Café has also hosted studio wrap parties and film shoots, attracting the like of Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio." Must be a marvelous cup of java served here!

I have once had espresso - an exciting, curl-your-hair coffee without dairy products or other "lighteners". I would try it again, even in the evening, if I had no commitments before noon the next day ...
