Revisiting the Topic of Caffeine

© Katherine Austinson

It’s been a while since we discussed caffeine content in our favorite beverage – a cup ‘o joe.

Suite101’s very own Barbara J. Mitchell has written a wonderful article on the subject titled The Question Of Caffeine.

"What is caffeine? It is found naturally in around 60 plants, or it can be man-made. Some of the natural sources besides coffee are tea leaves, cocoa beans, and cola nuts. Which means, of course, that in addition to coffee, you'll find lesser amounts of caffeine in cola drinks, chocolate, and tea. Coffee is the worst offender of the 30 million pounds or so of caffeine that Americans consume annually. We drink an average of 3 1/2 cups per day. The longer you brew coffee, the higher the caffeine content, but on the other hand, strong coffee doesn't necessarily equate to lots of caffeine. Also, arabica bean coffee has less caffeine than robusta bean coffee. (My thanks to a 1995 Better Homes and Gardens article by Ed Blonz for these two items.)"

Isn’t it refreshing that the better the bean the less the caffeine! What joy to know that our favorite arabica bean is actually less likely to overload us on caffeine?

Barbara goes on to say "for a healthy person, approximately 3 cups (8 oz. each) of coffee per day shouldn't cause any health problems. Those 3 cups add up to 250 mg of caffeine." And Barbara states that she has switched to half decaf coffee, just to be safe.

Any thoughts from y’all? How much caffeine affects you? How much withdrawal have you gone through if you’ve switched to decaf? We’ve discussed the decaffeinating process before – do you feel that it effects the quality of the brew? Give us your thoughts, please!
