Luck O' The Irish Coffee

© Katherine Austinson

I had a cup o' Irish Coffee today. Made me wonder, just a wee bit, where the stuff comes from... you too?

Suite101's contributing editor Lianne Bruynell Lopes, tells the story well in her December article, Flying Boats and Irish Coffee.

It seems it all stems back to those Flying Boats about 60 years ago. It was a way to calm passengers' nerves!

Whatever the reason for it's creation, Irish Coffee is a wonderful concoction. Every year the town of Foynes, Ireland and the Power Whiskey Company hold the International Power Irish Coffee Festival. You'll find a parade, family events, a BEST IRISH COFFEE MAKER championship and live music and bands every night.

Here’s Foynes’ recipe for Irish Coffee:

"The following is the original recipe devised by Joe Sheridan.

Heat a stemmed whiskey goblet. Pour in one jigger of whiskey. Add one spoon of brown sugar. Fill with strong black coffee to within one inch of brim. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Top off with whipped cream, slightly aerated, by pouring it over the back of a spoon, so that it floats. Do not stir after adding the cream as the true flavour is obtained by drinking the hot coffee and Irish whiskey through the cream."

Slide one down the bar to me, will ya, ... and the luck o' the Irish to ya!
