Larkspur Market Is This Town's New Hot Spot

We've got a new coffeeshop down on main street in my Minnesota home town - and it's the talk of the town! It's Larkspur Market.

We have a quiet town of 15,000 or so. Our heritage is German and so we DO promote ourselves as a little Germany in America, but beyond the tourism, we're pretty average. We all like to spend time with friends and family. We all like to have our favorite place to gather. Well, lately, most of the town has decided that their favorite place to gather is the new coffeeshop, Larkspur Market. This week it will celebrate it's 1st Anniversary!

Owner Barbara Haroldson has outdone herself, creating a place that is so unique -- I don't imagine you could find another coffeeshop like it. She's christened the place as a deli and giftshop with the motto, "Meet Us At The Market", and I tell you, everyone for miles around is taking her seriously. You can find high school hockey players, soccer moms, attorneys and even the silver-haired crowd within Larkspur's doors every day.

What's so special about Larkspur Market?

Let's start with the outside of the place. The brick building was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and has housed a couple of drug stores, a fabric store, a department store and for many years was the home of the town newspaper. On the south side of the building you'll find a brick mural of sorts. It was added in the 70's and depicts the life of the early German settlers.

Stepping inside you'll be taken by surprise. How do I explain it??? High two-story ceilings. Wonderful aromas from the bakery, the espresso machine and candles & potpourri. It's like slipping into a different era or a different culture. Murals hand-painted on the walls show life-size facades of European store fronts - from Spanish to German and French. A cobblestone pathway meanders through the Market, guiding visitors through the gift shop, past the cozy fireplace and deli area to the Internet Cafe at the back of the building. It's absolutely remarkable!

The delicatessen menu at Larkspur Market includes freshly baked bread from the Market's kitchen. And the coffee - well !! Let's start with the espresso. The Baristas are trained at their craft and can make a most excellent espresso, latte or cappuccino. And then the brewed coffee comes from beans roasted up North at Alakef Coffee.

This seems to be the place you could go not only to sip the coffee, but to feast your eyes on the surroundings. Sometimes that's part of the meal or snack when Judy and I eat out -- to let our eyes w ...
