Caffeine Counts

We've all been told that different coffees contain different amounts of caffeine. According to research done at Coffee and Caffeine FAQ, here's the breakdown of levels of caffeine.

Drip coffee contains 115-175 milligrams (mg), a 2-ounce espresso has 100 mg of caffeine, brewed java has 80-135 mg and instant coffee contains 65-100 mg. One 12 oz. soda contains anywhere from 30 - 70 mg of caffeine.

Caffeine can be found in coffee, tea, cola nuts, chocolate, mate, guarana. It is a stimulant of your central nervous system, cardiac muscle, and respiratory system. As one of my favorite television characters puts it - "the finest organic suspension ever devised".

Moderate caffeine consumption is usually considered to be up to 300-400 mg a day. Specific blends have varying amounts of caffeine, measured in percentage of caffeine per millilitre. : Colombia Supreme Dark 1.37 %, Espresso Roast 1.32 %, French Roast 1.22 %, Vienna Roast 1.27 %, Mocha-Java 1.17 %.

Varietals work out this way: Ethiopian Harrar-Moka 1.13 %/millilitre, Guatemala Antigua 1.32 mg%Indian Mysore 1.37 %, Jamaican Blue Mtn/Wallensford Estate 1.24 %, Java Estate Kuyumas 1.20 %, Kenya AA 1.36 %, Kona Extra Prime 1.32 %, Mexico Pluma Altura 1.17 %, Mocha Mattari (Yemen) 1.01 %, New Guinea 1.30 %, Panama Organic 1.34 %, Sumatra Mandheling-Lintong 1.30 % and Tanzania Peaberry 1.42 %.

In closing, this word of caution: monitor your daily caffeine intake. Don't make caffeine out to be more than it is or less than it is. In my opinion, it can't cure your diseases but it also can't seriously cause you any issues if you are a healthy person and limit your intake. And most importantly, if you're consuming caffeine, make sure you're enjoying the vehicle that delivers it to your system!
