Grounds For Recycling

Now, at the turn of this century, recycling has become a part of our daily lives. Environmental consciousness makes us think up new uses for old things. It's almost an obligation, or is that an obsession?

We dutifully bundle up our old newspapers, smash our soda cans, rinse out our peanut butter containers and flatten our milk jugs.

So, coffee connoisseurs, what can we java junkies recycle? What else, coffee grounds!

There must be a million and one uses for thoroughly using coffee grounds, and I don't mean as landscaping rock for the kid's fish aquarium! I've heard that grounds can be good odor eaters, but I'm not so sure about that. According to Heloise, the advice columnist, "this is an old hint every military family knows. When moving a freezer or refrigerator, put coffee grounds in a sock or knee-high, tie the end to close and place inside the appliance." Sounds a little messy to me.

Recently, I read an advice column about the wisdom of using grounds as fertilizer in gardens. Apparently, its best to throw coffee grounds onto your compost before using it to fertilize the family garden. They can, however, make great mulch right out of the filter! Just spread them about an inch think around your plants and flowers and they will hold down the weeds quite well.
