Ephedra, is it safe? Now that we understand how dietary supplements are regulated let’s look at what they actually are. Until 1990 and the Nutritional Labeling and Education Act of 1990 dietary supplements were considered to be vitamins, minerals, and protein. In 1990 it changed to include "herbs, or similar nutritional substances". In 1994 the term was expanded to include supplements beyond essential nutrients and now things such as ginseng, psyllium, enzymes, glandulars and mixtures of all. In further articles I will continue to look at supplements and explore which ones are safe, unsafe and just a waste of money. Until you know something is safe I recommend questioning whether you really need to be take it. If you are giving it to a child I recommend calling your physician to make sure it is safe.
